CarterMatt Awards 2017 results: Who was the winner of Breakout Star?

Welcome to the CarterMatt Awards results! Throughout the final days of December we’re going to be sharing with you the end results of one of the greatest editions of these awards ever since we first started them six years ago. Hundreds of thousands of you voted, making this edition incredibly competitive and also a total blast to conduct. We hope that some of your favorites end up being among the winners this year!

The Breakout Star award is one that we always do find to be personally enjoyable, mostly because of the fact that it recognizes someone who has really burst onto the scene over the past twelve months with a fantastic performance. They’ve caused you to take note of who they are, the skills that they bring to the table, and the passion they have for the work.

Basically, they’ve done everything in their power to ensure that you never forget about them moving into the next year.

We had eight worthy candidates for the award this year and any of them would have been a great champion — we absolutely think that they all have big roles in the television world coming up.

For 2017, your breakout star is Oulander’s Sophie Skelton

Skelton, who plays Brianna on the series, won in a pretty decided vote with 57% of the total going to her. Meanwhile, Isabel Lucas of MacGyver was in second place with almost 27% of the vote.

While season 3 was not the first appearance from Skelton on the show, this was when she and her character both started to come into her own. We started to understand more of her worldview coupled with some of how she was suffering. She had to come to grips with the entire world around her changing almost overnight and that cannot be an easy thing for anyone to handle, let alone a young woman who would be struggling to figure out her life even if she wasn’t in the midst of such bizarre circumstances. She had many beautiful scenes on the show, especially those in her final episode of the season entitled “Freedom & Whisky.” There’s more great content to come from her in season 4; we won’t spoil anything here, but if you are a Brianna fan she has some of her most immersive story still ahead. Consider this year to be the solid foundation for everything that is coming up next.

2018 in general looks to be a great year for Skelton even beyond Outlander, as she also has a role in the upcoming Day of the Dead: Bloodline.

Congratulations to Sophie, and of course all of her fans who worked hard to give her some love this year!
