Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Meredith Grey’s romantic future may take some time

Meredith Grey

For a time, it seemed as though Grey’s Anatomy season 14 was taking us down a road that was eventually going to end with Meredith Grey and Nathan Riggs being together. The two clearly had an attraction and a great deal in common; yet, the relationship didn’t quite work out. Megan effectively came back from the dead and over time, Riggs decided that he wanted to be back with his former fiancee. The two had a fresh start, and as a result of that Meredith now finds herself single again.

Is this a difficult road ahead for her? Sure, but it would be a mistake to sit here and proclaim that Meredith needs love in her life when she doesn’t. Grey’s Anatomy is not a romance. It’s a medical drama about people trying to figure out what they want out of their lives as a whole. Romance is a part of that, but far from the only part. There are also friendships, family, and so many other dimensions to think about. This is why we imagine Meredith treading carefully down a road to whatever her future could hold. She won’t rush into any romance just like she wouldn’t rush to treat a patient without understand what some of their symptoms are. She wants to make the right decision for herself.

Originally, there was a plan for Grey’s Anatomy to bring in some sort of new love interest for Meredith this season, but it seems as though this plan is now in the rear-view mirror. The characters originally brought in for that purpose is undergoing a creative shift.

To go along with this, we also have the following quote on Meredith’s romantic future; here is what executive producer Krista Vernoff had to say to Entertainment Weekly:

“What is next for Meredith in terms of a love life remains to be seen … I believe that romance and love are always a possibility, especially after we’ve lost the loves of our life. We have to evolve out of our immediate grief. I believe that immediate grief takes more than a couple of years. I don’t want to ever short-shrift the people who have gone through the death of a spouse and say you just move on, or you just move on with the first person.”

Is there hope for Meredith’s future?

There is always hope and there shouldn’t be any reason for anyone to hurry things along here. One of the things that makes Grey’s Anatomy the great show that it is comes courtesy of its longevity. It’s got 24 episodes a year and it’s been on well over a decade. Through this sheer number of episodes you have a real opportunity to witness the sort of evolution that you frankly won’t get almost anywhere else.

When do you think Meredith should have a new love interest?
