Peter Capaldi’s letter to young Doctor Who fan further cements his greatness

Peter Capaldi's letter

Just in case you wanted another reminder of the greatness of the Twelfth Doctor of Doctor WhoPeter Capaldi’s letter to a young fan is that reminder. It’s one of the sweetest things that we’ve seen any television star do; it also serves as a great reminder of what it means to play the Doctor. It’s more than just putting on a fun costume and pretending to travel through time and space. It’s also about enlightening and being there for young fans who grow up watching you.

Let’s face it — we all get attached to certain Doctors, and for many of us the Doctor we first start watching is the one we grow to love the most. Matt Smith was our first, and as a result of that it’s hard for any other one to top his performance.

For a young fan by the name of David, Capaldi is the first Doctor he grew attached to, and knowing that his regeneration was imminent he was apparently having a rather hard time getting used to the idea of someone taking his place. David’s family then sprung into action (with, per the BBC, some help from Santa), and both he and his brother received hand-written notes from Capaldi himself for Christmas. The one to David is more notable of the two, just because in it he reassures the young boy that he will grow to love the new Doctor (played by Jodie Whittaker) and that in one form or another, he will always be there. Regenerating is never a fun experience for The Doctor, but change is necessary.

It really does feel that a letter like this is the perfect way to send off Capaldi as The Doctor given that, perhaps more than anything else, his generosity is one of the things that we will remember the most about his time in the role. This is a man who somehow found the time to be active on the convention circuit all over the world even while filming for the majority of the year and doing some other projects. Playing The Doctor was a dream of his ever since he was a child and it showed. Now, he has the opportunity to venture off and do other things — though if we were Peter, we would probably take an extended nap first. Doing this show and all it contains for the past few years has to be rather exhausting.
