Will Wynonna Earp season 3 draw the show’s biggest ratings to date?

Is 2018 going to be the year of Wynonna Earp? We know that for us, we certainly would be more than happy if that does turn out to be the case. The Syfy series is one of the best of its kind — funny at times, moving at times, romantic when it wants to be, and absolutely inspiring when it comes to the perseverance of some of its characters.

What we think helps the series more than anything else at the moment is strictly this — we’re starting to near an era where Wynonna Earp enters the mainstream. For most of the first two seasons it has embraced its cult status — we didn’t discover it personally until season 2, but it’s a cherished underdog that finds a way to draw its audience from all walks of life. It doesn’t get big viewership but it finds its value through some other means. It routinely trends on social media during its new episodes and it receives coverage from many top publications.

This is a series that, despite its wintry setting and its supernatural undertones, reminds us just as much of Chuck or Psych as it does Supernatural — it’s a show that embraces its mythology, has fun with itself, and really should appeal to even more people than it has at present.

While season 2 averaged just under 500,000 total viewers in the live+same-day ratings, don’t be surprised for season 3 to top over 600,000 a week. We’ve felt that momentum has build for Wynonna Earp at the start of this off-season and with some big Syfy series coming up, hopefully the network uses that as a form of cross-promotion. We also think that they are starting to understand more of what they have now. We’re not saying that the network was oblivious of Wynonna Earp and its true potential during the early seasons, but they may not have realized just what a widespread impact the show could make on social media. That’s why they should at least consider a different timeslot other than Fridays when more viewers are available — even if they do have their current spot Friday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern virtually all to themselves in the summer.
