CarterMatt Awards 2017 results: Who took home the Underrated Actor prize?
Welcome to the CarterMatt Awards results! Throughout the final days of December we’re going to be sharing with you the end results of one of the greatest editions of these awards ever since we first started them six years ago. Hundreds of thousands of you voted, making this edition incredibly competitive and also a total blast to conduct. We hope that some of your favorites end up being among the winners this year!
We’re not going to squash the top story in the Underrated Actor results — this, when you consider the sheer number of total votes, is one of the most competitive categories in the history of the CarterMatt Awards. There were three candidates who really fought tooth and nail throughout the process — Eric Christian Olsen of NCIS: Los Angeles, Michael Weatherly of Bull, and Tony Denison of Major Crimes. Eventually Weatherly fell off slightly, but as of the morning leading up to the awards there was a difference of just one percentage point between Denison and Olsen and just over 200 votes. When you consider that this poll had around 30,000 votes on it, that makes the slim margin all the more impressive!
In the end, though, there can only be one winner, but let’s set the stage for a moment. This is the third year that this specific category has been in existence, and the winner is joining such past champs as Matthew Gray Gubler of Criminal Minds and Hugh Dancy of Hannibal. It’s a great group to be a part of!
Also, it’s rather interesting that the two nominees in Denison and Olsen who went head to head at the end are both part of long-running crime TV franchises. We like to think of this as yet another reminder that these shows are worth far more attention that they often receive.
The end result
Tony Denison of Major Crimes takes home the prize for his extraordinary performance as Andy Flynn — it was a hard-fought showdown, and that something that Major Crimes fans really should be proud of as the show reaches the end of the road. It’s a testament to all of the wonderful work Denison has done in between this series and the closer, and this victory also caps off what’s been a really great year for the actor in terms of CarterMatt site polls. Sharon and Andy, if you recall, were the winners of the Crime Dynamic Duos tournament earlier this year.
After this victory, our hope is that Denison lands some more great work on other shows worthy of his talent.

Very very disappointed that Eric Christian Olsen did not take out this award. Of all the nominated actors he is the most diverse in the roles he has had both in tv and movies. He is accomplished in both comedic and dramatic roles and has a great presence on screen. ????

Best actor should be Sam Heughan, on Outlander series, Starz. Definitely underrated.
