Victoria Christmas Special: Talking a notable absence
Is Daniela Holtz leaving Victoria and her role of Baroness Lehzen? Judging from what happens in the Christmas Special, you may start to wonder that very question.
The unfortunate reality for the Lehzen character on the ITV series is rather clear: She had a shelf life. This is a series based on history and with that, the Baroness was bound to go at some point. This Christmas Special just so happened to be the time in which we had to say farewell to her once and for all.
We knew we would be saying goodbye to Lehzen the moment that we saw the synopsis for the episode in advance:
“Set in Christmas 1846, the episode sees Victoria uncharacteristically melancholy as she prepares to tackle her first Christmas without her beloved Baroness Lehzen.”
There may have been some of you hoping that Lehzen could find her way back to the show after she was let go of her duties in the season 2 finale amidst clashes with Albert and then later the Queen. He especially felt threatened by the close relationship that she had formed with the children — Albert is a man who fancies power, and with that he also doesn’t fancy other people being able to have more than him. That’s what makes in part his marriage to Victoria so difficult — he routinely has to reconcile time and time again the fact that his role as a husband is somewhat counteracted by his wife being the Queen.
As for the future of Holtz, hopefully she gets an opportunity to do more English-language series after doing quite a few German series earlier on in her career. Her absence will be felt hard in the Special, given the fact that she has appeared to date in every single episode of the show.
We’ll see how Victoria adapts to not having her Governess around when the season 2 Christmas Special airs today (or late February in the US) — as for season 3, we hope to see it airing in the UK later in 2018.
