Why SNL needs to spoof Outlander, Chicago Fire, This Is Us, and more
Yet, there are so many other shows that SNL could explore and mock openly if they really wanted to, ones that cross over into a number of different networks and genres. For now, take a look at five different shows (or least five different types of shows) we’d love to see the series take on in the future.
Outlander – Out of all the big-budget cable productions we remain the most shocked that SNL hasn’t touched upon this one. When you think about the central premise — a woman finding love after accidentally traveling back in time hundreds of years — the series is ripe with comedic potential. We’ve openly lobbied for Sam Heughan and/or Caitriona Balfe to host in the past; if that doesn’t happen, why not have fun at the expense of the show itself? We love Outlander enough to be able to take a joke.
Chicago Fire – There is something really great that NBC could do here openly mocking the number of Chicago shows that there are. The only reason SNL may not do this is because Funny Or Die did something reasonably similar a couple of years ago. There is still enough humor to be had here, though, where SNL could spoof One Chicago without crossing over into familiar ground.
This Is Us – Given the show’s runaway hit status it’s amazing that there hasn’t been more done to make fun of this show — it’s on NBC so there’s plenty of room for cross-promotion. Maybe someone at Studio 8H is waiting to book Sterling K. Brown as host before going completely in this direction.
Grey’s Anatomy – Seriously, why are we not making fun of Grey’s Anatomy? It’s one of the most-popular series of the past 20 years? Maybe this is NBC actually not wanting to give attention to another network property but no matter what you make of it, not having a good Grey’s Anatomy spoof is a complete and utter shame.
Sitcom revivals – Maybe you make fun of Will & Grace or Roseanne coming back — to us, the most fun here would be lumping all of the revived comedies together and doing a whole sketch about how, for one reason or another, networks can’t seem to come up with any new ideas. Part of the fun here is that it would come on SNL, a show that has famously given us repeats of such dud sketches like The Californians and Laura Parsons, Newscaster of Tomorrow on a number of different occasions.
