Blindspot season 3 episode 9: What’s next for Jane and Weller?
For the time being, though, what is clear is pretty simple: Weller told Jane that he killed her daughter. This is his secret, but what he believes may not bee 100% reality. Show creator Martin Gero was coy about the aftereffects of this twist — and if Avery is really dead — in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, one where he also explained what Jane’s reaction is going to be to the news:
“She’s not going to be happy about it, I can tell you that much … We deal with her reaction and the whole backstory in the very next episode, our midseason premiere on January 12. The story is a painful one for Weller, but it will be hard for Jane to get over the betrayal, [especially] that he didn’t tell her sooner … We dedicated a quarter of the next episode to this backstory. Weller will lay it all out for Jane and us and we’ll show a bunch of flashbacks to really let everyone in on what happened in Berlin finally.”
All of this is one way or another going to be important to determining where Avery stands on this show. Is Weller telling the truth? It’s a fair question but it’s hard to figure out why he would lie in this instance … unless someone the idea of Avery being dead is better than Avery being alive in Jane’s mind. Maybe she’s up to something terrible that would haunt Jane forever.
Or, we can also envision this as a possibility: Weller thinks he killed Avery, whereas the truth is that he almost did. Maybe he walked away from her body and has spent the better part of the past several months harboring tremendous feelings of guilt over that … while she is off somewhere planning her revenge.
