Jenna Coleman talks Victoria Christmas Special, birth of modern Christmas
Want to get a little more insight regarding that? Look no further. Victoria and Albert were in some ways Christmas pioneers; Jenna Coleman herself had the following to say on the subject to What’s On TV in a new interview:
“What’s fascinating is that you see Christmas becoming Christmas as we now know it in this episode. Victoria has a line that I love about not expecting a forest at Christmas when she talks about all the trees that Albert wants them to have. We have Albert to thank for an awful lot that has shaped our world today and the traditional image of family and Christmas stems from them both.”
This is going to be a very warm, heartfelt special at times and it could even be weird to see what is a traditional Christmas origin story. Of course, there will also be struggle, tension, and just about everything else you would expect from a standard Victoria episode. Clearly, there is also some sort of a time jump. After all, how else do you explain the photo above? Victoria’s daughter is getting older rather quickly, and this further illuminates that the series isn’t going to just stall things out just so that we can watch Victoria and Albert age at the same exact rate as Coleman and Tom Hughes.
We’re grateful to know entering the special that this seemingly isn’t the last time that you are going to see either one of them as these characters — a Victoria season 3 renewal was already commissioned by ITV. While there may not be a firm premiere date for that season just yet we’re hopeful that there will be a chance to see it in the new year.
For now, just enjoy the Winter Wonderland that awaits you! Also, laugh at the fact that this episode was actually filmed months before Christmas and many of the cast just had to pretend. The special airs in the UK on Christmas Day and this spring on PBS.
