More Chicago PD syndication deals raise chances of season 6 renewal
According to a new report coming in right now via Deadline, Fox Television Stations have secured a new deal where, starting in September, they will broadcast syndicated episodes of the NBC show in such markets as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Washington D.C., Houston, Phoenix, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Orlando, Charlotte, and potentially others. Clearly, these are some of the biggest markets in the country and that should help to give Chicago PD a whole lot more exposure — which, in turn, should help get the show a season 6. We weren’t all that concerned about the renewal odds for Chicago PD before that but this just furthers our confidence that we’ll be getting a whole lot more of Intelligence in the future.
So why is Chicago PD better situated than any other Dick Wolf One Chicago series at the moment? The reasoning begins and ends with all of the syndication deals. USA and Oxygen Media already have a good syndication deal in place for the series on cable, and of course you can watch more recent episodes through NBC. Despite airing in its sixth season Chicago Fire hasn’t quite found that perfect syndication home, probably in part because it tends to be a little more serialized and the firefighter subject matter is a little less proven as a performer in syndication. Chicago Med, meanwhile, seems perfect for syndication but hasn’t gotten anywhere close to being far enough in its run just yet. Maybe if it makes it to season 4 or 5 some of those conversations will start happening.
Syndication is often the best way for networks to offset the higher costs that often come when a show starts to become more expensive later in its run — we don’t think that it is as valuable as it was back before streaming services came into play but it can still add more viewers to your live broadcasts.
