When is Katheryn Winnick directing her Vikings season 6 episode?
While some of the details surrounding Winnick’s episode are unclear (at least in terms of the story and air date), others are starting to come together. Winnick is already scouting locations and in a post on Twitter, she revealed the official prep date: January 2. Like the rest of the Vikings cast she’ll get a chance to go break for the holidays, and then resume work on new episodes. Her episode seems to be the first on slate in the new year. Directing not just some glamour project that an actor takes on — there’s extensive pre-production and post-production on the other side. There’s also the challenge of potentially having to direct yourself, which many people can’t do. Vikings doesn’t feature Lagertha in every episode so it’s possible she won’t have to be in front of the camera and behind it at the same time, but even if that is the case, Winnick is someone we feel confident in balancing both jobs at once.
The news about Katheryn Winnick directing first came out during the Vikings season 6 renewal announcement this fall. As a result of that, signs points towards History forging a campaign around it. We feel that it’s a very smart move, since fans love Winnick and seeing her in this new role is something everyone is in support of. This is also great for Winnick who can then use this new skill set in a variety of different ways. She can direct more episodes Vikings, and it can then translate to a wide array of other shows and movies. Think in terms of the arsenal of tricks you need to have for Vikings — you need to be able to tackle intense action sequences; beyond that, you also need to take on intimate personal moments. Vikings asks a great deal of its actors, and with the sheer number of extras often involved in some of its larger sequences, it asks a lot of its directors.
Unfortunately, you will have to wait for quite some time still to see Winnick’s episode of Vikings season 6 air — there is no return date yet for the second half of Vikings season 5, let alone anything beyond that. This is an announcement for History on the other side of this season.
