How The Good Doctor could benefit from Freddie Highmore Emmy victory

There are few shows having as good of a past few months as ABC’s The Good Doctor. Ever since its debut the Freddie Highmore series has blossomed into a hit. It’s got the best ratings of any new scripted drama on TV, and beyond that Highmore just received a Golden Globe nomination for his work as Dr. Shaun Murphy. While he is an actor who has been ignored many times over in the past by the Hollywood Foreign Press, this is a much-deserved honor for a program he really helps to anchor. There are other great performers and characters on The Good Doctor but Highmore is the engine that pushes the story forward. He is the wonderful outlier, the brilliant physician who struggles to find a way to make the more social aspects of his job work.

Given that The Good Doctor does already have so much, it is fair to question just ho Highmore winning could bring something more to the series. Yet, we do think that there are some that would come, with a season 2 renewal almost guaranteed to be at the top of the pile.

At the moment, the ratings for The Good Doctor alone are enough to make you think as though David Shore and the cast will hear good news about another season within the first couple of months of the year. If Freddie wins the Globe, we wonder more if ABC will do something similar to what This Is Us did last year in the midst of that show’s overwhelming success: Hand down a whopping two-season renewal. If you know you’ve got a hit, why not give it time in order to breathe? Giving The Good Doctor two more seasons would be a great opportunity to allow it to have a little more time in the spotlight and for some of these characters to grow and evolve. Maybe this, in turn, could lead to some more nominations for Highmore in the future.

As for whether or not Freddie has a shot of winning the Golden Globe this time around, we would say that there is a chance. However, we’re not overly optimistic when you think about how Sterling K. Brown has run the table for This Is Us for most of the year.
