Did The Exorcist season 2 finale ratings help season 3 chances?

The Exorcist season 2 finale ratings are now official over at Fox and they raise yet an important question: Do they help the show’s season 3 odds? We’re in an era where every viewer matter.

The good news is that the show didn’t fall at all for the finale episode of the season; unfortunately, the bad news is that it didn’t rise, either. This final episode on Friday drew a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic (even with last week); it gained a few viewers on its way to 1.32 million, but that’s not so many that anyone is going to feel comfortable with the show’s future.

The Exorcist itself certainly did all it could to set the stage for a third season, offering a big ending that leaves many questions unanswered for a third season. Maybe this was the organic way to end the season or maybe this was the producers’ way of setting the stage and challenging Fox to give them another kick at the can. While the ratings are mediocre to poor, you can still argue that on Friday nights few series tend to fare that much better. We’re looking at a night in which Hawaii Five-0 won with a 1.0 rating and we haven’t seen ratings significantly better than that for most of the season. Shark Tank used to do fairly well in that spot but ABC, for some reason that is unknown to most of mankind, decided that it should air on Sundays. They also got rid of two reasonable performers in Last Man Standing and Dr. Ken in favor of putting on the air Once Upon a Time in a new night. (That’s not working all that well.)

Unfortunately, you can argue that there were some concerns about the future of The Exorcist even beyond just the show’s ratings. With Disney’s recent acquisition of 21st Century Fox, it’s certainly possible that they could squeeze out a property that is this terrifying and geared more towards older audiences. (The fact that they seem to be keeping Deadpool, however, seems to suggest that if they warn the audience properly they may not have too big of a problem with it.)
