Victoria season 3 renewal confirmed ahead of Christmas Special
Per a new report from the BBC, the Jenna Coleman series is officially coming back for another batch of episodes, presumably airing in 2018. It makes sense for the network to want to make more of this show for a number of different reasons.
1. There is so much more story to tell – Queen Victoria is one of the most preeminent rulers of the past several centuries. While eventually ITV may decide that they don’t want to tell some of these stories anymore we’re nowhere near the point where they are ready to end the show. The question we wonder is just how long they will want to use Coleman as the Queen — if they push the show forward too far into the future, there may be a need to recast the character similar to what they did with Claire Foy on The Crown season 3.
2. The ratings are great – This is one of the better-reviewed shows on ITV and with the Royal Family as subject matter, this is a show that can be licensed all over the world in a way that many of their shows cannot. Queen Victoria is a recognizable figure all over the world, and marketing is one of the reasons why so many period dramas play so well in the UK.
In a new statement confirming the show’s renewal ITV’s head of drama Polly Hill had the following to say:
“We look forward to regaling audiences with the next part of the illustrious Queen’s reign … We’re delighted that the nation has taken Victoria to its hearts.”
This Victoria season 3 renewal also means that viewers of the show can watch with confidence in America. Season 2 premieres on PBS January 14, and you’ll get a chance to check out all of those episodes on Sunday nights. Victoria follows a similar counter-programming pattern that Downton Abbey had on PBS for many years.
