The Exorcist season 3 renewal: Should it happen at Fox?

Going into tonight’s finale, should we be optimistic about a The Exorcist season 3 renewal? Is it going to take a miracle to bring this show back to life once more? CarterMatt is ready to dive into this topic and share with you what we know.

As many diehard fans recall, getting a second season for The Exorcist was no easy feat — it took many campaigns, DVR ratings, and Fox understanding that this was a franchise worth keeping around. Even if its live ratings are not great it has streaming potential, a familiar franchise name, and also international appeal that few other series have. Thanks to its semi-anthology format, it also can air a new season next year that is separate enough from the first two. With the right casting, it’s also easy to figure out how The Exorcist could bring in some new viewers who have never had a chance to check out the show before.

Now, let’s move over to the other important question here: Whether or not the odds are high that something like this could happen. The Exorcist season 2 had a loyal following, but the ratings were lower than season 1 by a pretty wide margin. This season averaged a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just over 1.3 million viewers live+same-day; in terms of overall ratings, this marks a decline of more than 30% across both measurements. This doesn’t mean that the show is 100% dead in the water, but it definitely has its work cut out for it and unfortunately, right now we’d lean more towards this being the end of the road than there being another season.

Is there anything that can be done to ensure that a season 3 does happen? It’s challenging now that we are so far into the season, but the best thing that you can do is watch the finale tonight either live or very soon after on your DVR. Encourage all of your friends to do the same and stream it after the fact. Networks are ultimately all about dollars and cents and you want to do everything that you can in order to show them that you are financially committed to the show and its future. Even just by viewing advertisements around The Exorcist you’re showing some level of commitment.
