Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat on series’ tremendous impact

The Doctor Who Christmas Special is getting set to air in just a week and a half — leading up to it, Steven Moffat is getting reflecting. Moffat has been the showrunner for the BBC series for a number of years, and he realizes just how lucky he’s been to have this job. “Twice Upon a Time” is his final episode and it’s clear that he is not taking this moment for granted.

In speaking on the subject of saying goodbye to the series (per Variety) at a special screening in London, Moffat made a powerful, compelling argument about why this show is so important, and in turn, why he is so grateful:

“People change their view of the world and what they are capable of because of a silly show about a man who travels around in time and space in a police box. So never mind the reviews, never mind the ratings or any of that … Count the scientists, the musicians, the scholars, the writers, the directors, the actors who became what they are because of this show….I do not even know what is in second place, but without doubt, and by that most important measure, ‘Doctor Who’ is the greatest television series ever made.”

Moffat is correct in this assessment — Doctor Who is not a show made for critics. It’s an emotional show, one made for fans who love the story and become attached to the imagination. It’s a show you grow up watching and a show that makes you want to be a better person. There are certain shows that just stick with you all through your lives and it doesn’t matter what else is going on — Doctor Who is one of those shows and we’re absolutely excited to see how things are going to pick up beyond the special with Chris Chibnall as showrunner.

Remember this: Change isn’t bad. We all change as people, so why wouldn’t we want Doctor Who to change at the same time? As long as it still keeps the soul and the sense of imagination, it’s going to be hard to hate what Chibnall and new Doctor Jodie Whittaker brings to the table.
