Gotham season 4: Who should be the new Big Bad?

Gotham new

Unfortunately, we come bearing bad news if you are a Gotham fan — the series is not airing new episodes tonight on Fox. Not only that, but the series as a whole is now done from now until the spring. There is no definite return date as of yet, but rest assured that once there is, CarterMatt is going to be here in order to report on it.

So, while we wait to get some more great content related to the series, let’s shift our questioning over to this: Who should be the Big Bad for the remainder of the season? While Gotham does have their rotation of full-time villains including Selina Kyle, Oswald Cobblepot, and Barbara Kean, we don’t necessarily believe any of them to be a Big Bad. We define the role more as someone who comes in, poses a major threat to many characters, and then ends up dipping out near the end of the season. Through the first half of the season we considered it to be Lazlo Valentine / Professor Pyg for a while; yet, by the end of the season we were looking a little bit more in the direction of Sofia Falcone. She is the person who orchestrated almost everything that happened, including the performance of the Pyg through much of the first half of the season.

Sofia Falcone – It makes sense to consider her the Big Bad moving into the second half of the season given that she is probably more powerful than ever before. With her father dead Sofia can now run his entire operation, and to go along with that she’s temporarily thwarted Oswald and has Jim Gordon precisely where she wants him. She’s young, but she’s incredibly manipulative and played almost this entire situation how she wanted it.

Jerome – This is a pipe dream. The more likely scenario is that Jerome turns up, wrecks havoc, and then leaves a few episodes later. We typically do not get more than just three or four episodes a season with Cameron Monaghan and we have a hard time thinking the rest of season 4 is different given his commitments to Shameless.

Ivy – In casting a big-name performer in Peyton List for the latest incarnation of the character, it’s pretty clear that Gotham wants to go all-in on this new version of the character. Is this Ivy’s final form, to use a video-game analogy? It’s clearly the most dangerous iteration to date and it’s so much closer to the villain in the comics — albeit with a very different backstory that’s beyond weird if you stop and think about it.

Scarecrow We reported yesterday on the rumors of a possible recasting. While we liked the original Jonathan Crane very much, one way or another it does feel like there is more to be done with this Scarecrow. For all of the buzz about him entering the season his total number of appearances was actually somewhat limited in the end.
