People’s Choice Awards 2018 is happening — but not until November
Days after CarterMatt questioned what the world is going on with the ceremony (which typically airs in January and has a nomination window open by now), the awards-show’s new home (in E!) confirmed today that the 2018 ceremony is going to happen on Sunday, November 11. You read that correctly — it’s not coming on the air for another eleven months!
E! is producing the show alongside Jesse Ignjatovic and Evan Prager. In a statement per Deadline, Jesse had the following to say:
“We are thrilled to be producing the 2018 ‘People’s Choice Awards’ for E!. The PCAs are an iconic award show because they truly reflect the fans — through the power of their votes … There is no better home for this show than on E! and we can’t wait to bring that fan energy to the stage in 2018.”
Meanwhile, E!’s own Jen Neal added the following about the decision to push the show back so far:
“Den of Thieves, Jesse and Evan have an incredible track record in live event production, and we are excited to tap into their expertise, along with Wilshire Studios, as we evolve and supercharge this fan-centric, iconic franchise for the next generation … By moving ‘People’s Choice Awards’ outside of the traditional awards season, we establishing a new window to celebrate the best in pop culture and will harness E!’s tremendous multi-platform reach to engage fans and drive momentum throughout the year.”
We do think that much of what these statements are saying is true — it’s probably smart to move the show outside of awards season and E! has a great social platform to continue to engage fans throughout the year. The one issue they have is that E! ratings are not CBS ratings, and therefore we wonder if it will be more difficult to court talent to be on the awards show when we do roll around to it. The one thing that we hope with the new show is that more nominees and winners will get representation, regardless of whether or not there is talent in attendance to collect a trophy.
