NCIS season 15 episode 10 review: What’s in Sloane’s tin case?
At the center of “Double Down” we saw Sloane and Torres overseas on a USO tour, one that featured a comedian as well as Senator Phillips. All was going reasonably according to plan, at least until it was revealed that the Senator’s son Chandler was injured in what appeared at first to be an accident falling down the stairs. However, over time Abby was able to piece together an entirely different story: Chandler was pushed down the stairs.
The moment that Senator Phillips was clued in on the news, the mission suddenly started to change. It was all about Torres and Sloane trying to find a way in order to ensure that they could get him back home to be with his son — given that they were in a warzone, that proved to be no easy task. There was gunfire, danger, and the comedian carrying on about every little thing. Phillips’ mettle as a leader was proven when he ended up taking a bullet in order to save the comedian’s life, and that raised the stakes after the team was trapped and seemingly had no way to safety.
We’ll pick up the other side of this story in a moment — first, let’s resolve things stateside.
The case of Chandler
While Sloane and Torres were desperate to get out of their crisis alive, the rest of the team was at home trying to figure out just who was responsible for trying to kill him. As it turned out, the man was leading a secret gaming operation with loaded dice — he was cheating, and the more that was uncovered, the more it was clear Chandler was starting to turn his life around.
As it turns out, Chandler’s former partners figured out that he was getting out of the life — and when confronted, the two parties ended up trying to sell the other out. The video evidence ended up sealing the deal. The case was closed and Chandler does get another chance at life.
The ending
We focus back now on Torres and Sloane, who were still stuck overseas — Torres was able to leave and eventually bring back help. They would be able to make it back in time for the holidays.
As for why Jack Sloane was so eager to get back there in the first place, it just so turned out that there was a tin case there. What was in it? We didn’t see the contents, but this looks to be a curious memento from her past — something that we really hope NCIS picks up and soon.
CarterMatt Verdict
Here is the one part of the episode that didn’t quite work for us in the early going — the strange decision to paint the comedian on the USO tour as some sort of entitled brat. We don’t think that the NCIS writers really needed to further the “celebrities are garbage” narrative, especially since we like to think most celebrities heading overseas for this are trying to do good. We wish there was a different way to tell that story, but we’re happy that he came around in the end.
Outside of this, NCIS ended this part of the season with a great, compelling hour of TV — and with a great mystery at the end with Sloane and that tin.
