Saturday Night Live: Colin Jost and Michael Che promoted to co-head writers

Colin Jost and Michael Che

Colin Jost and Michael Che now officially have another stamp of approval courtesy of Saturday Night Live — a promotion to co-head writer on the NBC show.

These two guys have been working together as co-anchors on Weekend Update for a rather long time, and this promotion can be best seen as proof that Lorne Michaels is rather thrilled with the direction of the segment. This season has seen the funniest Weekend Update segments of the Jost / Che era, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that their influence would start to also expand elsewhere. They are two veteran comedy performers / writers who have shown up here and there outside Weekend Update since joining, even if most of their work is relegated to their time at the desk.

For those wondering, SNL is not losing the head writers they already had in place for season 43; Kent Sublette and Bryan Tucker already have that role. This just means that the show has a solid team at the shop and establishing leadership in any writers room is a good thing.

This move comes just a mere matter of days before SNL airs its annual “Christmas episode,” a show that used to have more meaning back before the series started to air Christmas sketches in other shows. This year it has Kevin Hart as the host and the Foo Fighters as the musical guest … just in case you needed more evidence that the producers are really going all-out in order to ensure that this is one of the best episodes that we’ve seen. We do think that they need to have a good one given the dip in times during the James Franco episode. It seems as though the internet is incredibly polarized on that episode, with some loving it and some others feeling as though it left something to be desired. Personally, we feel like it had some high points here and there but was otherwise marred with gaffes and sketches that didn’t work from conception onward.
