Outlander season 3 finale ratings down — the season’s performance as a whole
The numbers for “Eye of the Storm” are in, and in total the Starz series ended up generating 1.43 million viewers — a respectable total, but down versus the prior week. Given the hype that does tend to surround finales we anticipated that the show would’ve gone up past 1.6 million and challenged “First Wife” for the #2 episode of the season.
So, what happened? The simple assumption here is that the majority of viewers who have Starz also have the ability to watch the show on the app. We know there were many Outlander fans who chose to watch the finale at midnight, the moment that it first became available. More viewers than usual, understandably, probably didn’t want to wait until 8:00 p.m. Eastern time to watch the end of the season — the numbers that we report here are just the live+same-day TV numbers. We wish that there was a way to measure app views, streams, and On-Demand viewings without waiting for a press release, but that is the position we find ourselves in with this show. Maybe at some point this week Starz will release a new estimation of Outlander and its total viewers — we know that it’s more than 5 million a week, and as a result of that it’s hard to bummed out about the series not setting a record in live+same-day. It is, after all, a somewhat-archaic way of measuring television viewership. It’s just the only one we have.
As for looking at the entire season, season 3 was an enormous victory for Starz. Outlander averaged around 1.5 million viewers and was up significantly versus the 1.09 million who caught season 2 live. While CarterMatt knows that season 2 was hindered somewhat by airing on Saturdays, we think that more viewers discovered the show in the past year.
What does this mean for the future?
We know that there is an Outlander season 4 coming in 2018 — it’s nice to have it confirmed that it’s coming next year! Beyond that, we remain hopeful that a season 5 is coming up. There are talks underway and maybe we’ll get so lucky as to get that announcement before Christmas. If not, let’s hope that it will come early next year. There is no reason to think that Starz will be making us wait any longer than that, since they more than likely want to keep the show on the same filming and airing schedule that it’s on now.
As soon as more news is announced, we’ll have it for you here.

I know I couldn’t wait. I watch on STARZ online through my TV provider.

Ratings mean nearly zippo for premium cable shows in this day and age of multiple platform viewings.

I only joined watching Outlander this year. I love it and cannot believe that rating. You can see from all the media sites that everyone comments that they view the show before the 8pm start because they are big fans and want to watch asap. Just ask everyone to let you know how the watch Outlander on the night. I have already got my friends onto it. Otherwise I won’t talk to them. OUTLANDER the best thing since making flavouring vodka.

I’m guilty of watching the finale at midnight!! But I didn’t want to wait and I’ve watched it a lot since then; wish that the ratings people could monitor anything that Outlander is viewed on for their ratings numbers. It was a fantastic finale as was the whole season, so good and I think one of their best since they started the show! Thank you Starz, keep up the good work by having this show continue for another 6 seasons at least!!

Do they count those that record it? I always watch Monday morning–Sunday night are problematic for me and I want to make sure my viewership is in there. Great season!

I am very surprised the finial episode didn’t fair better, in my opinion, it
was the best season ender of all three seasons, it was an emotional
rollercoaster, jam packed with every essence of the book, it was nothing short of phenomenal!

I watched both. The app and Sunday night. Ratings should be astronomical. By far the best series on a long time.

I watch at midnight (EST) on Saturday, but also watch again live on Sunday evening so my viewing will be counted. I also DVR all episodes for future viewing!

I watch on Demand as soon as available, usually 9am Sunday Morning. So I guess I’m not in the recorded total, along with many friends. I’m sure the viewing from internet and demand would give you much, much larger numbers.

I couldn’t watch it because I had a Christmas party to attend Sunday evening. so I watched it earlier in the day. I think that the network will eventually update the viewings, as long as they have the technology to do this!

Not really surprising, if an ep is not well received, it’s the next ep that suffers. again Ron Moore separated the couple in ep 12, sick of that crap, he has no originality, stick to the book if that is all he can offer.

Totally agree. I understand the separation of the two main characters at the start of series 3 so their individual stories could be told. But to separate them again so late in the season was was stupid

Just like networks count DVR delayed viewing results, STARZ needs to figure out how tovacviunt forcearky app viewing. Otherwise, ratings and stories like these are unreliable index.

Could part of it be that diehard book readers didn’t like the changes & what has had to be deleted? Those of us who love the books might have been too critical. I have tried to separate the book from the series. Cait & Sam have given me faces for book characters, along with Murtagh- Dougal- Angus&Rupert- Geilies- Bree&Roger, and the rest. It is still my favorite.

I agree with this. I also felt there were too many changes in the story and I personally felt NO chemistry between Claire and Jamie.

they need to account for the earlier episode watchers using Amazon Prime and the STARZ app. those numbers would go up dramatically

It should have been an extended episode and the sex scenes have been toned down a lot. This couple is so believably in love on screen and we enjoy watching them show their love for each other like was done in seasons 1 and Hopefully they don’t continue the G rated love scenes. This show is watched predominately by women and its two leads are physically beautiful and sell unbelievable love very well. The revealing sex scenes were a part of that.

Took a couple of readings to understand your post. At first I thought you meant the sex needed toning down. Now I see you mean it was too tame, and I agree. They have so much fun reading & flirting thru it! I wish they could do longer episodes or more of them but 13 episodes take 10 months to film, edit, other post-production. Our favorite actors would never get time off to pursue other projects & interests or simply chill. They have little time for it now, filming 12-14 hours a day, 6 days a week.

I get the commitment to their time but as for the love scenes, the majority of the audience is women. They had just the right balance between sexy as hell without going over the top but this year they’ve G rated it and it’s simply not as believable. A huge part of this couple is their passion. Not cutesy drunk sex but deep, seriously sexy, naked touching sex and it’s gone. Very sad

My understanding from a friend in scheduling at a major network – is that they DO know how many viewings, etc. that occur on the app. and “on demand”. And those would have to be substantial for Outlander. Everyone I know watches the first time at midnight EST Sun – which is 9PM PST Saturday night and then we watch at least once more – sometimes several times over the week. To me – those are the real numbers.

Maybe if Starz hyped the finale to season 3 like they did with season 2 with an extended episode and a preview (more than a 15 second scene) of scene 4 or a behind the scenes look, the ratings would have been higher. Even a reading (by Sam & Cait) of Drums or an introduction of Rollo would have been nice.

Maybe we should all let Starz know that should it cancel Outlander before the story is ended….as per Diane’s books… we will NOT be pleased….and a lot of of us would even love to see it continued with new scripts aside from those based on the books. Perhaps detailing out some of the past adventures in flashback…or creating new adventures.

I watched it at midnight on the app on my TV, twice more during the day Sunday on my iPad, then watched it on Starz at 8pm, again at 10pm, walked the dogs and caught the 11pm airing too…just couldn’t stop watching! Except for 1 week when I was out of town, I watched early on the app AND the 8pm broadcast on Starz. So, yeah this same day TV ratings in the age of multi-media streaming is archaic! I tried Starz as a free trial about 2 months before the show originally aired and have kept it since BECAUSE of Outlander.

Oh.. it would be so nice to finish by breaking another record this year. ? Next year we will!!
Overall as you wrote it was a great viewership improvement from the last season. I am sure that the next year it will grow even further. There are so many people who haven’t discovered the show yet.
Everyone please keep spreading the great word of mouth and converting more people, so in 2018 we can smash more records. I feel this is the least we can do as fans to thank the amazing cast and everyone involved in creating this awesome series. ??
Also I would like to say a special thanks to this website for your outstanding hard work, professionalism and very informative coverage on all things Outlander! ?
Happy Holidays All!! ?
