The Voice top 8: Will Brooke Simpson or Chloe Kohanski make finale?

Voice season 13 promo

We’re back writing about The Voice! It’s been a while, but we’ve been keeping tabs on this season and thought it best to dive in with some thoughts before the finale.

This is a fairly interesting season competition-wise in that while some old traditions still remain (i.e. if you sing about Jesus you sell a ton of singles on iTunes), we do like that there are some interesting people left who aren’t always the same people America always embraces. Take, for example, the current favorite Chloe Kohanski — sure, she’s got the support of Blake Shelton (really the best coach you can possibly have), but she also has a deep, gravely voice that you don’t often get with female artists on the show. She’s unique, interesting, and someone who could be reasonably viable after the show — we don’t exactly see that often.

Meanwhile, you’ve got another great artist in Addison Agen who is also by our money a lock for the finale — she did a great performance tonight that was earthy and real, and despite being so young she has a maturity about her that speaks volumes. We actually think that she’s the sort of artist who really benefits from not winning the show. She has earned the right to control her own career and the best thing that she can get from this is support from people who will help give her the opportunities that she needs. That’s really the biggest thing you can gain from this show. (You’re sure not going to get it from some of the record deals after the fact…)

Brooke Simpson closed the show tonight with a performance of “Faithfully,” which we love mostly because we love Journey. As for whether or not we love it enough for her to make it to the finale … it’d be great to see Miley Cyrus have an artist in the final round this year, and she’s one of the best singers. Yet, we’re not sure how much viability she has after the show. We really think that this is a competition between Addison and Chloe at this point and many of the other artists are interchangeable — at least in comparison to past seasons.

In the end, we’ll see what happens during the mass-elimination on Tuesday night.
