What were some of the biggest Golden Globes 2018 surprises? We’re rather happy about some of these!
Granted, we wish that there was an overall list of surprises that was larger to choose from, mostly because the awards by and large this year were predictable. That’s a shame given that there was a time in which the Globes were one of the most unpredictable awards shows out there and they would recognize some of the biggest underdogs and shows / performers that were off the beaten path. They still at least did that here and there throughout the nominees this year, but in smaller form than in years past. As a matter of fact, you were able to see the Drama Series nominees coming from a mile away — it’s not a slight against any of them, but it made for a somewhat ho-hum morning from an excitement standpoint.
Think of this list as the companion piece to our published list of snubs from earlier in the day.
Katherine Langford, 13 Reasons Why – We’d been very much in Langford’s corner for this but it absolutely didn’t look like she was going to get some love in this category — that’s what makes it all the more thrilling that she did!
Kevin Bacon, I Love Dick – The majority of Americans probably haven’t even heard of this show, and that’s probably what makes Bacon getting some love for it all the more surprising.
SMILF and its star Frankie Shaw – There weren’t many critics who prognosticated that the Showtime series would get some love in its first year — yet, it did and across a couple of different categories.
Michelle Pfeiffer, The Wizard of Lies – Even though she’s one of the biggest possible names that the Globes could nominate, we didn’t see this one coming within the crowded list of Supporting Actress nominees.
Pamela Adlon, Better Things – It’s not that we were surprised to see Adlon get this nod — we’re just immensely glad that she did at a time when she’s had to deal with so much drama pertaining to Louis CK’s sexual misconduct. She deserves this for a fantastic performance.
