Blue Planet III: Could it happen with Sir David Attenborough on BBC One?

Blue Planet III

Tonight, Blue Planet II comes to a conclusion on BBC One; with that, we’re starting to look towards the future and a possible Blue Planet III.

Are we going to get a chance to see another ocean documentary series, especially one with the master talents of Sir David Attenborough? We don’t necessarily think that it is the first thing on anyone’s mind coming out of tonight’s finale — this is going to feel like the conclusion of a long journey and we cannot imagine anyone having all that much of a sense of urgency regarding what’s around the bend. There was quite a bit said in these seven episodes about our oceans, our shores, or what can be done in order to make things better. There will always be more to say, but a big part of that revolves around finding the right time and place in order to say it.

What we can say with a high degree of confidence at the moment is this: The commercial success of Blue Planet II is such that it seems like a lock that the BBC will keep their nature documentaries going. The first two episodes of the documentary drew more than 10 million viewers on average, and that isn’t counting any of the viewers who watched after the fact either via catch-up airings or repeats. This is a testament to the intrigue that the British people have in our natural world, and this is without even considering some of the numbers that are going to come in from other countries or DVD sales. We anticipate that Blue Planet II is going to be the sort of series that has a strong shelf life just because more people are going to be exposed to it after the fact.

For now, the best advice we can offer if you love these documentaries and want to see more of them are to buy the DVD / Blu-Ray collections, recommend them to friends, and also make sure that the messages of Attenborough and others do not get lost in the shuffle. This is a world worth saving and we have a capacity to make that happen.
