Outlander season 3: Some Caitriona Balfe fun — and finale implications

Before we cap off today’s news, why not have a little more fun discussing Outlander?

If you didn’t see it earlier today, there’s a new video out there from our friends over at the W Network in Canada (who broadcast the show there). You can see it below HERE and it shows off some of star Caitriona Balfe’s funny side — just in case you didn’t know already that she has a great sense of humor. She says something in “Canadian,” she talks about her cat Eddie, and also describes how she would live in Italy if she were to live anywhere in the world right now.

This video should be fun contrast to what is a very important Outlander episode on Sunday, especially for Balfe’s character of Claire. By the end of the finale we are going to hopefully learn if Claire will be able to stop Geillis Duncan from fulfilling her master plan; she also has to save Young Ian and figure out what the future for her and Jamie holds. They’re already all the way out in Jamaica, so why not look at settling in America? We know that’s where season 4 is heading…

Performance-wise this is also one of the most important episodes in terms of future awards consideration. While the Golden Globe ballots have already been submitted (the deadline for that was days ago), it’s possible that some voters will have had a chance to check the episode out in advance and may have used that for voting. As of right now, we consider Balfe the closest thing that Outlander has to a lock — we are fairly optimistic when it comes to the show and also Sam Heughan’s chances, but Caitriona is a two-time nominee and the recent Critics’ Choice Awards nominations suggest that she has an inside track.

Could Caitriona win the award this year? If she’s nominated she has a reasonable shot, though the Actress in a Drama Series category is stacked right now. Two of the most formidable contenders beyond her on paper seem to be Claire Foy of The Crown and Elisabeth Moss of The Handmaid’s Tale, but there are also some other contenders out there like Maggie Gyllenhaal from The Deuce and Mandy Moore of This Is Us. We’ll have a chance to break this down more after the nominations come down bright and early on Monday morning. (Think in terms of 5:00 a.m. Pacific time for some horrible reason — we’re going to try to get up for them.)
