Peter Capaldi farewell to follow Doctor Who Christmas Special on BBC America
The farewell special is entitled Doctor Who: Farewell to Peter Capaldi (fitting, no?), and the news was confirmed to go along with the latest trailer for “Twice Upon a Time” below featuring the actor alongside David Bradley and Pearl Mackie. Colin McFarlane is going to serve as the narrator for the special, which will chronicle Capaldi’s time on the show as well as the legacy of executive producer Steven Moffat — who is also departing with this special. The Doctor, the producer, and the companion in Mackie are all leaving at the same time — basically, the BBC is giving new showrunner Chris Chibnall a blank slate to work with, and he can decide to do more or less whatever he wants. That’s exciting, but certainly also risky.
We know that there is going to be plenty of time in order to figure out what the future holds for Doctor Who in season 11; for the time being, let’s just say that we’re happy that BBC America is doing what they can in order to send off Capaldi in style. They are likely very cognizant that for some out there, he is the first Doctor who they had a chance to experience live. It’s an emotional connection viewers forge to the Doctor, and it matters that fans get this opportunity to say a proper farewell. Peter did great things as the character, both on-screen and representing the franchise all over the world.
