MacGyver season 2 episode 10 review: Mac’s rescue mission

Lucas Till

What’s ultimately going to make MacGyver season 2 episode 10 in retrospect one of the greatest episodes of the season has to do with variety. For the majority of the series we’ve seen it structured as follows: Mac and the Phoenix Foundation go out into the field and risk their lives to help others. Often, they use unconventional means in order to achieve unconventional solutions.

This time around, though, Angus MacGyver found himself in the Phoenix Foundation itself serving in a different role: Teacher. Over thirty college students were trapped on a ship in the Arctic Ocean, and he attempted to do almost everything that he could in order to save them. While his skill set still proved to be valuable, this mission tested his skill as a communicator more than anything. He had to guide Zoe, the group’s leader, through the process of saving herself and others — while also forging a connection with her in the process.

While we’ve seen flirtations of sorts between Mac and Samantha Cage this season, we would argue that this episode offered up more of a romantic window for Mac than any other we’ve seen so far this season. He and Zoe had a natural connection due to her interests, and by around the 35-minute mark she was already thinking of ways to get to the Phoenix Foundation in order to work there.

Sadly, nothing is ever quite that easy with this show or this team. As things started to fall apart with the rescue mission and none of the solutions were working, Zoe realized that there was only one thing she could do: Sacrifice herself in order to save everyone on the ship. She could seal the door and protect herself, but in doing so she knew that her life would be lost.

Was Zoe a hero? Absolutely so, but this still was a storyline with a pretty sad ending. For a guy so optimistic and heroic Mac still has lost a lot — his relationship with his father is broken, and to go along with that this Zoe was someone who could have been a friend and possible love interest down the line.

Other odds and ends

Tonight Bozer and Leanna took their partnership / relationship to a new level as they kissed in the midst of another mission. Unfortunately, the bad news here is that it doesn’t seem like the two are going to be allowed to see each other again after training.

Finally, Elwood and Jack ended up working together to help erase some of the demons of his past — unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out as according to plan. Elwood is going to fall out of the picture once more, but it definitely seems now like he and Jack are on the same page and Riley’s biological dad isn’t as terrible as we first thought.

CarterMatt Verdict

MacGyver season 2 delivered a heck of an hour tonight, one that was emotional in a way that we haven’t seen in a while. Kudos to Lucas Till for a great performance as he anchored this story in a way we haven’t quite seen before.
