Legends of Tomorrow season 3 to take over Supergirl timeslot in February

Supergirl season 3 episode 4

There are some interesting schedule changes coming up in February for The CW, and they involve Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl front and center.

Here’s where things now stand for the two shows. On Monday, February 12, Legends of Tomorrow is going to take over the timeslot from Supergirl, where it will air out the remainder of its third season. This means that, in turn, Supergirl is going to take a rather long hiatus of a couple of months. It’s going to return on Monday, April 16, where it will then air out the remainder of its own season 3 episodes. Because of the long hiatus, its season 3 finale is not going to air until June.

What this scheduling announcement basically confirms is that The CW is going to be airing new episodes of some of its content during the Winter Olympics, a risky move — yet, they may feel as though they have the audience for it to not matter as much. The same people who watch the Olympics in masse are not necessarily the same people who are going to tune in and watch these shows.

So why make this move in the first place? A big part of it may just have to do with The CW not wanting to become completely overrun with superheroes all the time. They already have The Flash and Arrow on the air, and you’ve also got Black Lightning premiering in January — it’s hard to balance four shows of a single variety on the schedule, let alone five. We just hope that this isn’t some sort of a sign that either Supergirl or Legends of Tomorrow is facing some sort of reduced episode count or something else in the future. While neither show is generating terrible ratings, we’re cognizant of the fact that they both cost a pretty penny to make and that may be something that the networks are currently thinking about intently.
