Who died on the Gotham season 4 fall finale?
Warning: There are obviously some big spoilers ahead.
Not too long after we learned that Sofia Falcone was being sent away by her infamous father in Carmine Falcone, we saw her father and many of his men gunned down in a pretty horrendous fashion. It was a total shock to lose Carmine in this way, given that we are talking about a foundational villain for the show, someone who was a huge component of the first season. You saw his conflicts play out with both Fish Mooney and Oswald Cobblepot, and eventually Falcone decided that he wanted to retire after years of ruling the underworld.
Over time, the Falcone name did still hold some power within the Gotham world. For one, we had his son Mario Falcone, who was eventually murdered by Jim Gordon. Then, we had Sofia. Crystal Reed played the latest iteration of Falcone on the Fox series this season, and Carmine’s presence tonight was tied to his hope that she would eventually lead the city. That didn’t happen.
What the death of Carmine Falcone signals is that Gotham now is rudderless in terms of having a big-time crime boss. It does open the door for Oswald to become the new crime boss reigning over the city; granted, Sofia could do the same thing given that she does have the Falcone name — that does still mean something, even after her father’s death and in spite of some of the claims that he made about her being “not ready.”
Basically, the pieces are now being reshuffled on the board as we move not only past this fall finale, but also move into the second half of the season. The struggle for Gotham is that due to the comic-book source material, they don’t have the luxury of killing off many characters. Falcone is someone that they could feasibly eliminate without less of an impact. Falcone does make it to the arrival of Batman in the comics, but the show had to take some liberties somewhere if they wanted there to be a death with significant stakes behind it.
