Grey’s Anatomy season 14, firefighter spin-off could have many crossovers

When Grey’s Anatomy was on the air at the same time as Private Practice, it was a little more challenging to do spin-offs on a regular basis. After all, the two series were technically set in different cities and other than with characters like Addison and Amelia, there were fewer reasons for the stories to cross paths.

With the upcoming and still-untitled firefighter spin-off, however, it’s a very different story. These are shows in the same city and we’ve seen already with Chicago Fire that the first responders have a pretty close relationship with the hospital. It’s something that the firefighter spin-off’s showrunner Stacy McKee describes (while reiterating some of what we’ve said regarding location) to Entertainment Weekly:

“We’re throwing every idea against the wall, and it’s like spaghetti, we’ll see what sticks. What’s fantastic about this show is because it’s Grey’s Anatomy-adjacent, there’s the potential for things to connect really, really easily. With Private Practice, even if we did a crossover, we always had to build into the story that there was a change of location, because Private was located in Los Angeles and Grey’s has always been in Seattle. This show takes place in a Seattle fire station that could, in theory, be just a few blocks down from Grey Sloan Memorial. Plus, I know all the writers over at Grey’s and vice versa, so it’ll be a very symbiotic relationship.”

There’s obviously a very big piece of connective tissue between the two shows in Ben Warren, the one member of the flagship cast coming over full-time. He’s now venturing into the world of firefighting after spending the better part of the past several years at the hospital; he is working to find himself and develop more of an understanding as to how he can help people. For the first time in many months he seemed to find a passion for himself saving someone in the Grey’s Anatomy season 13 finale.

The firefighter spin-off is slated to premiere in 2018, and it will launch right out of the series proper. While we’re worried about whether or not there is any ground for them to tread on that Chicago Fire hasn’t already done, we’ll certainly give the series a shot and see what exactly they can pull off.
