Vikings season 5 episode 3 preview: Is Ivar the Boneless going to get lucky?
Ivar’s power in the viking realm is growing and so is his reputation for being a ruthless, brilliant strategist. He helped lead the charge against the Saxons for killing his father Ragnar (who we sorely miss from the show), and he’s taken over the town of York (with his two brothers) after slaughtering pretty much everyone who lives there. What is his next move? After having the luck of the gods on his side through out all of this he wants to offer them a blood sacrifice (as was custom in their culture) and surprisingly women are offering up their bodies to the gods (and to Ivar!).
We also have King Harald doing what he does best – trying to convince women that they should marry him. He’s never had any luck with the ladies, and even promises of making them the Queen of all Norway has not been enough to lure them into marriage. This time around he’s taken Lagertha’s lover (Astrid) prisoner in hopes of convincing her that marrying him and become the Queen of Norway so that she will help him overthrow Lagertha. It’s a pretty smart strategy since if he can flip Astrid then he can get a lot of insider information on how Lagertha thinks. Astrid has betrayed Lagertha in some ways already when she slept with her son Bjorn, but will Astrid be willing to betray Lagertha on this level? Seems like she may not have much of a choice since the preview (which you can check out below) shows her landing in Harald’s kingdom as he tries to push his agenda on her.
Lastly we are going to see more of Heahmund working to rebuild the Saxon army and reclaim the town of York. We know from the premiere that Ivar and his brothers are reinforcing some of the town, but they’ve left a weak spot that Heahmund is going to exploit. The preview mentions Ubbe wanting to work out a compromise with the Saxons and we have to wonder if this is a trap or if Heahmund really wants to put an end to this peacefully? Heahmund is a Bishop, so we have to imagine that if he can end this without hurting anyone else he would want to, but this is also a character that has a strong internal war raging as he battles doing what’s right by god, what’s right for the kingdom and what he wants as a man. What we do know is that Ivar is not the type of man that wants to make a deal with anyone and thinks that he can just kill his way to victory.
Do you think that Ivar is going to win this war against the Saxons? Is it possible that Ragnar’s sons and Heahmund can reach an agreement that will stop this war? Leave us your thoughts in the box below and tell us how you think it’s all going to end.
Since we are on the subject of Ivar – we are holding our annual CarterMatt awards celebrating the best of television and the actor behind Ivar (Alex Hogh Andersen) has been nominated by our staff for Underrated Actor of 2017. He won our CarterMatt award last year for best Breakout Star and you can help him win this new title at the link here.
