NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 and the ever-present Hetty question
Unfortunately, the news that CarterMatt has for you is not going to make too many fans of the show all that happy — there is no installment tonight. Instead, CBS will air the next new episode on December 10 and following that, there is one more episode to come in the calendar year. That one is going to be more themed around the holidays.
We hope that at some point over the final two weeks of the year NCIS: Los Angeles does choose to take on one of the biggest elephants that it has in the room: The status of Hetty. We do love that the series is pushing the envelope, so let’s make that clear right from the get-go. If a crime procedural does the same thing week after week when it comes to its story and it’s characters, it’s going to bore people. Nobody wants to see a rinse-and-repeat series where the same thing happens time and time again without any change. They want to see the characters have some skin in the game!
Yet, the struggle with Linda Hunt’s character at the moment is similar to what happened with Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) on Criminal Minds this past season. We do think that there are long-form stories that people want to see on crime shows as opposed to the typical story of the week. However, we don’t think that some of these people want to see said characters separate from the rest of the team for a really long time – maybe just a few episodes. That’s why if this Hetty story is going to continue, we hope that she gets a chance to link up with at least one other series regular in the future. If that doesn’t happen there is a reasonably good chance more people will grow frustrated with Hetty’s absence from the team.
In the end, what we want to see is this: NCIS: Los Angeles finding a way to bring Hetty back into the fold in the final episodes of the year. Continue the story with her past, but have the team find a way to help. Give us a little bit more familiar before we dive into the longer holiday hiatus. This, in turn, gives us something more to look forward to seeing when the new year rolls around.
