SNL cold open: Michael Flynn, Vladimir Putin, and ghosts of Donald Trump’s past

Dave Chappelle

What should the SNL cold open contain for this weekend’s show? It was easy to speculate on many different things in between Donald Trump talking tax cuts, Matt Lauer, Robert Mueller, or maybe something a little more bizarre. As per usual, we imagined going into the show that much of it revolved around whether or not Alec Baldwin was available.

So was Alec open tonight? As it turned out, yes — and it was holiday-themed as well. Baldwin met up with Kellyanne Conway (Kate McKinnon), and then after that received a ghostly spirit, A Christmas Carol style, by a series of apparitions from his past. First, it was Michael Flynn; after that, it was Billy Bush. Then, the Ghost of Christmas Future showed up in the form of Hillary Clinton. The entire thing was pretty absurd, but it was a perfect play on all of the smoke that is around Trump at the moment with various allegations and rumors. (We thought there would be a joke or two at Matt Lauer’s expense in the monologue and there was — however, they didn’t actually name him.)

Kudos also to Cecily Strong, who popped in here and there throughout the sketch to give us some Melania Trump randomness. To be specific, she was there to mock how creepy and dead most of the White House winter decorations look. That’s been made fun of on social media for most of the week.

So what did Trump decide to do at the very end of this? Well, let’s just say that he’s very interested in destroying all of the Apprentice tapes now…

Overall, we could consider this to be a worthy return for Baldwin after a little bit of time away from the show. It was funny, but more than that it was inspired and not just the same thing. We also really liked the fakeout where SNL really made us think that we were going to be getting another appearance from Steve Bannon only to have it be Hillary instead under the robe.
