Shameless season 8 episode 5 video: Why is Frank angry now?

Shameless season 8 episode 5 on Sunday looks to continue one of the more amusing through-lines of the season: Frank being more involved. He’s trying to be a better father and person, but he can’t exactly drift all that far from the person that he’s been for the past several decades. He’s still grumpy, he’s still crass, and he is still not going to shy away from some of his life experiences.

This is where the sneak preview below comes into play. In this clip, you can see William H. Macy’s character doing just about everything that he can in order to challenge Liam’s teacher on the subject of her new word-association exam. He claims that Liam’s answers to questions, while technically wrong, are still appropriate. He then cites “cultural bias” as the reason for the discrepancy between what is supposedly right and what actually is.

Basically, this is Frank throwing a grenade into the proceedings and we imagine that things are going to get both super-defensive and super-ugly before they get better. The teacher is patient enough to hear Frank out, but we can’t imagine that he’s going to be able to convince her that Liam knowing about sniffing glue at his age is altogether a good thing.

“As Fiona tries to raise the profile of the neighborhood, Ian helps Trevor to raise money for a new youth shelter. Meanwhile, Carl loses his scholarship and gets creative with securing the tuition, Lip stands up to a friend and gets hurt and Frank teaches the parents at Liam’s school all about the working class.”

Beyond the Frank storyline the idea of Carl getting “creative” to secure tuition money sounds both endlessly entertaining as well as terrifying. This is the sort of family who really will do anything in an effort to get what they want, regardless of whether or not it is moral in the process. We aren’t altogether positive that Carl is going to get what he wants as a result of this.
