While there are still two episodes left in Outlander season 3 this fall, Outlander season 4 is very much on the horizon. The series is multiple episodes into filming right now in Scotland and provided that all goes according to plan, it will be on the air come the fall of 2018.
To help keep the excitement going executive producer Matthew B. Roberts did a recent question-and-answer session on Twitter, and there’s one comment that he made that we know got many minds aflutter: Outlander won’t be filming exclusively in Scotland this season, even though that is their home base.
As for what Roberts may be referring to when making this said comment, Ronald D. Moore noted previously that Outlander could be filming some scenery in Eastern Europe to help replicate North Carolina. He did not confirm if any cast members would be involved in said filming, and to date there’s been no word about filming in any other locations. These comments were also corroborated by Roberts himself, to a certain extent, later in the Q&A. It’s possible that he is referring to something different but this is the information that we have for now.
It’d be nice if the show was able to secure a few scenes on location in North Carolina (given that this is where much of the action takes place), but we’d say that is doubtful. We know some people are bummed by that, but we have a ton of faith in the Outlander team! They’ve done a great job replicating the Caribbean so far this season and they haven’t filming anywhere close to it. (All of the work on the show as of late was filmed in South Africa.)
Below are two of the answers from Roberts in regards to filming for season 4.
As for some of the other interesting comments to come out courtesy of the Q&A session, Roberts did note that his plan is to write at least two episodes of the upcoming season. He does still have one more left this season in the finale, which he co-wrote with Toni Graphia. More than likely the episode-by-episode writers for season 4 will not be made apparent until close to the show’s premiere date.
Meanwhile, Roberts does also have plans to get behind the camera and direct someday — we’ll see if that’s something that happens for season 4 or down the road. (Roberts confirmed that there is no season 5 renewal as of yet, though signs seem to be very much charting within that direction.)
