Are Steve and Danny going to remain close friends for many decades to come in the Hawaii Five-0 world?
According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, there will be a point in an upcoming episode in which Danny’s life is on the line; as a result of that, he’s going to start to hallucinate to what the future could be like for him and some other characters.
The good news is this — in Danny’s mind, McGarrett doesn’t suffer an early death as a result of the radiation poisoning and he / Steve are still going to be good friends. They’ll be chilling out on the beach with each other, probably still bickering about anything and everything under the sun. While it doesn’t seem like that much conflict would be a good thing, we saw earlier this season with the whole stress-management storyline that there’s something cathartic and functional that comes through their communication style.

As for what else is coming, these wannabe flash-forwards (though technically, they’re not canon to anything other than what’s in Danny’s mind) are going to show you the new leader of the Five-0 squad after Steve eventually steps down. We are very interested to see who he thinks is the most qualified to lead the team — we wouldn’t be shocked if it’s someone within his own family, but it would be funny if it was an older version of Jerry or someone else we would never imagine in the role.
What makes these episodes so fun at this point in the show’s run is that we’ve already come to know these two characters so well. As a result of that, there is fun that can be had with throwing them in unusual / fantasy scenarios and seeing what happens. This is the sort of story that feels just like a gift for the fans and we have to imagine that it was a hoot to write in the process.
