Major Crimes season 6 ratings rise as ‘Sanctuary City’ arc comes to an end

Major Crimes season 6 ratings

After many weeks of disappointment, there is finally some good news to report on when it comes to Major Crimes season 6 ratings. The show is on the rise!

Tuesday night’s new episode “Sanctuary City Part 5” — which concluded the most-recent run of episodes of the TNT series — ended up drawing a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That’s the best rating of this season to date, and an improvement that puts the show more in line with where it was during much of the season that aired beforehand in the second half of season 5.

What’s even more impressive here comes in the realm of total viewers — almost 2.4 million viewers caught this episode, and that is an increase of over 25% versus the episode prior. It’s also the biggest audience of this season by a pretty wide margin.

What’s the big reason for this? More than anything we would chalk it up to viewers interested in checking out the wedding between Sharon Raydor and Andy Flynn, an event many seasons in the making. We don’t necessarily think that there were a lot of new viewers for the episode. Instead, what we’re likely looking at here is a situation where viewers who typically watch the show on their DVR chose to check it out live, making sure that they didn’t miss out on an event that they’re going to remember for many years to come. They also probably didn’t want to get the story spoiled for them since everyone would be talking about it.

Unfortunately we don’t foresee the ratings bump leading to another season of the show, given mostly that the ratings are still down significantly verses the season 5 average and there’s little evidence that this is something that we’re going to see change the rest of the season. The one thing that is an asset for the next several weeks is that with This Is Us going off of the air, there’s one less competitor out there in the ratings. However, we’d argue that Bull may be just as big of a threat to a show like Major Crimes in that these two shows share a relatively similar audience — Bull does still have some stories to tell before the holiday hiatus.

Major Crimes season 6 will continue airing its next arc on TNT Tuesday night; be sure to stay tuned for more updates!
