Meghan Markle retiring from acting following Suits season 7
In her first joint interview with Prince Harry following her engagement announcement, Markle confirmed to the BBC that she is retiring from acting. She’s always been involved in many charities and causes, and it seems as though her new life is going to be geared around that:
“I think what’s been so exciting [transitioning] out of my career and into, as you said, the causes I can focus even more energy on, very early out of the gate, [is that you] have a voice that people listen to, a lot of responsibility … I see it is a new change, a new chapter. I’ve been working on my show seven years, we were so fortunate to have that longevity, and I feel like I checked that box and am very proud of the work I’ve done there.”
Technically, this is also the first time in which Markle has confirmed her exit from the USA series, not that it was a surprise in anyway. You just have to remember that the buzz about her relationship with Harry has been going on for well over a year now, and her contract was set to expire at the end of season 7. It was hard to fathom how she would continue on the show beyond this season, especially after an engagement like this. Suits films in Canada, where (understandably) the Royal Family is very popular. Cameras and paparazzi would be following her at every turn.
The one thing that we are somewhat sad about with this retirement is that it could render Markle unable to go back to the show for a cameo down the line. We would’ve loved to see her make a small appearance at the end of the series (the show is expected to be renewed), but that’s going to be (as mentioned) a logistical nightmare. The best thing that we could hope for here is to get an appearance from Patrick J. Adams, who also seems to be departing at the end of this season.
We’ll have some more news when it comes to Suits and the rest of the season soon.
