Saturday Night Live removes Safelite spoof sketch from internet after backlash
Safelite already made it clear that they themselves were not thrilled with the depiction of a window-glass technician (played by Beck Bennett) intentionally breaking windshields so that they could creep on mother-daughter combos after high school basketball games. It was a bit of an odd premise for starters, and in a post on Twitter after the sketch aired, the company had the following to say to the show:
“[Thanks] for the skit. Although we can take a joke, this one was a step too far. Our techs are our heroes.”
The one thing that we’ll say to Safelite? It’s called a “sketch” as opposed to a skit. We understand why they would be offended by it — we had never heard of the company before the sketch, and you know that their employees in the field are now going to be harassed by people wondering if they’re out to intentionally break windshields in order to repair them while hitting on people. We do think that it was meant to be a joke, but sometimes jokes go too far and in this climate it’s easy for people to get offended.
With that in mind, NBC seems to be washing their hands of the entire Safelite sketch once and for all. The network has removed the clip from all of their web portals and to go along with it, it is being removed from repeat episodes. In a climate where you’ve got all sorts of men being exposed for their predatory behavior, you don’t want to fan the flames by making light of such things.
Speaking of sketches that have aged extremely poorly over the past several months, we bring your attention to “Soda Shop,” a sketch featuring a soda-shop owner trying to go on a date with a local teenager. We have a feeling this one won’t be shown on the air anytime soon.
