Saoirse Ronan hosting Saturday Night Live December 2; U2 performing

Ryan Gosling

Want to learn who the next host is of Saturday Night Live? Look no further – CarterMatt has the answers!

Tonight the NBC show announced that Brooklyn star Saoirse Ronan will be hosting the show for the first time — this intrigues us just because she’s a bit of an indie darling coming onto a mainstream show. Also, we’re about 95% sure that the majority of the show’s viewers out there have no idea how to actually pronounce her name. (It’s still a work in progress on this end.)

What is relatively interesting is that so far this season, SNL as a whole has not brought on a whole lot of movie stars on the show — you had Ryan Gosling for the premiere, but given that he’s been a host before he’s not much of a risk. The only other risk that we had this season was Gal Gadot — we were nervous about this show, but she ended up doing a pretty good job even if some of the sketches left a little bit of something to be desired.

With Ronan, we have to think that she is very much into the world of SNL given how much time she’s spent in New York — she has to already know some of these cast members, right?

As for the musical guest, this is a group that’s certainly been around the block: U2. We’re honestly surprised to see them on the show at this point given that they certainly don’t need to be coming on. They’ve already had a pretty fantastic career and can generate publicity just by sitting on their couch at this point.

The other thing we’re surprised about with U2 coming on the show right now is that they feel almost more like a perfect addition to the show for the final one of the year. That tends to be the Christmas Spectacular when you get some holiday-themed performances … though Christmas often does tend to spread throughout the final two or three shows NBC puts on the air during the month.
