Criminal Minds season 13 episode 10 review: A pirate, a coffee addiction and Lou Diamond Phillips

Criminal Minds season 13

If you love Lou Diamond Phillips as much as we do then this episode of Criminal Minds is certainly one you’re not going to want to miss. He is guest starring as a sheriff on this episode – which is really cool because if you are a Longmire fan then you know that Phillips stars on that show as the best friend of sheriff Longmire. We first heard about him guest starring on the show before the Christmas holidays, so we’ve been excited about this for a long time to say the least.

If you were hoping to see some personal back stories this episode we didn’t get any outside of Rossi staying up way too late the night before playing poker and trying to get some coffee into his veins by any means possible. Something that we can certainly relate to being that we are all coffee addicts over here.

The story of the week had the unsub killing people in pool/water related murders and thinks of himself as a pirate. This was not a great unsub, he wasn’t scary, we didn’t feel nervous and we found ourselves completely not invested in him. If Phillips wasn’t in this episode this would’ve been our least favorite episode of the season, but Phillips saved it for us with another great performance. We got to know his character a bit as a Sheriff that lost his high school sweetheart in a water accident and with so many water accidents happening in his area, he’s always nervous every time they bring in a dead body that it’s her.

CarterMatt Verdict

Last season we had a huge departure from the norm with this series as we had a massive story arc that was all about Reid (who ironically wasn’t even on tonight’s episode at all), and many fans were not happy about it. This season Criminal Minds has done a complete 180 and has gone back to their normal procedural showcases once they wrapped up the story with Mr. Scratch at the beginning of the season. We have been hoping that there was going to be a better balance of some of the personal stories from the team along with some juicy unsubs that give us nightmares for weeks, but that hasn’t happened. Instead we’ve barely had any personal stories and unsubs that haven’t been as creepy as they used to be (except for Jamie Kennedy’s cannibal in “Lucky”).
