Sean returns on Shameless season 8 episode 4; Frank joins the PTA
If you last recall, we last saw Dermot Mulroney on the show at the end of season 6, when Frank revealed to Fiona that her soon-to-be husband had fallen back into his heroin addiction. Sean ended up leaving, but not before giving Fiona ownership of Patsy’s Pies. The Fiona – Sean dynamic is interesting in a few different ways, starting with the fact that he, (in one form or another) helped to get her on the path to where she’s now a landlord and has a bright future. Yet, he also caused her a lot of pain. This is a character who was a mixed bag for her and bringing him back now could mean either a chance for a little more closure or a chance to see him cause a little bit of trouble. Seeing one of the show’s most-stable characters going off the rails could mean trouble for not just Fiona since the other Gallaghers may be starting to view Emmy Rossum’s character as a sign that they too can get their lives together. We shudder to think that she’s an inspiration (we don’t think the Gallaghers look at things under such terms) but she is someone Ian, Lip, and others can look up to. It’s far better than Frank.
Speaking of Frank, the other part of Sunday’s episode (per the video below) that is interesting is seeing him join the PTA. At first glance, this is a noble pursuit for him and one that should make him appear to be a good father — that is, before he starts to get a little rowdy at a car wash and makes this all about himself/some sort of odd 1980’s rock music video. Frank loves attention and it’s pretty clear that there is a part of him that is going to love the fact that he is one of very few men in a world surrounded by women. It’s only a matter of time before he screws this up in a super-dramatic fashion.
