Grey’s Anatomy season 14 star talks polarizing Jackson – Maggie relationship

Jackson - Maggie

Mrs. Carter: Maggie is in a tough spot when it comes to her potential Grey’s Anatomy relationship with Jackson.

When you look at some of the most-popular relationships over the course of the ABC drama the one between Jackson and April is fairly high on the list. They got married in a particularly bold fashion and went through a lot together. Any character who is one of the first love interests after such a big breakup often has a difficult time and it doesn’t matter if this new love interest is a new or existing character. Take a look, for example, at Arizona and Eliza Minnick. The Minnick character was her first major love interest after the departure of Callie and she was almost set up to fail by being such an adversarial figure in the hospital.

For Jackson, his first potential love interest since April is Maggie. Aside from Jackson, we think that there are many reasons to care for Maggie. She was relatable and she has a relationship with Meredith and Amelia that’s been fun to explore. It’s just for some reason that the whole Jackson storyline hasn’t started working just yet. This doesn’t mean that it will always be that way though — a point that Kelly McCreary notes to TVLine:

“Historically, the most beloved relationships on Grey’s are the ones where the characters really challenge each other and push each other’s buttons, and they always come back to the love … Those are the relationships that people are the most invested in. So if Jackson and Maggie can find a way to help each other be the best people and doctors and, in Jackson’s case, parent, I think the audience will root for them.”

No matter if the two get closer or fall apart completely, James Pickens Jr. (Webber) told the website there is a “hard left turn” coming up in the storyline for these characters. That’s something that could mean in the direction of them becoming a couple or them at odds. No matter what it is, there’s a good chance that it won’t be permanent. Grey’s Anatomy is not a show that tends to set things in stone — look at all of the failed relationships so far as evidence of that.

New episodes of Grey’s Anatomy are going to be airing on ABC in January. For more specifics regarding the return date be sure to visit the story here.
