This Is Us season 2 episode 9: The emotional story of Kate

This Is Us season 2 episode 9, entitled “Number Two,” chose to take a somewhat different approach than the recent “Number One” fronted by Kevin. This was not so much a story trying to shock you in the closing minutes. Instead, it was about how Kate was facing a key moment in her life and how she decided to move forward from it.

We are speaking here of course of what transpired in regards to her miscarriage. The first few minutes of the episode tackled the event itself, while the remainder of the story after the fact really took on a little more of the aftermath. She was of course struggling, and understandably so — her feet were caught in quicksand and she didn’t know how to pull herself up. This is why Rebecca paid her a visit and did her best to comfort her. This was, in turn, an extension from the past in which Rebecca learned about a secret Kate was holding in regards to her singing aspirations and vowed to do everything that she could in order to lend a helping hand. Kate knew that she could go to her and this helped to somewhat put things into perspective.

With Toby, what she needed to realize was that he was hurting too in his own way and while he was not carrying the child, he still felt connected to it. At first, she blamed him for getting her so excited about the idea of becoming a mom — maybe he did go a little bit over-the-top but there’s something to be said for not wanting to live life cautiously. A happy medium with these two is always best, and maybe these two will find that now moving forward. The episode ended with the two of them determining that moving forward, they would try to have another child — just not right away.

Along the way, though, Chrissy Metz and Chris Sullivan both absolutely nailed their performances as you saw them wrestle with their grief in their own way — Kate tried to figure out if there was a way to focus in her mind while Toby took it upon himself to find the baby bath he’d ordered and give it to someone else who could use it.

There was no cliffhanger ending here that led the way into Randall’s story; this was instead just all about Kate, her feelings, her heartache, and how she’s strong enough to get back and fight forward. It’s an installment you will remember for a rather long time.
