The Good Place season 3 renewal official after strong season 2 performance
Today, NBC confirmed that they are ordering an additional 13 episodes of the Mike Schur-produced comedy, which stars Kristen Bell and Ted Danson alongside William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, Manny Jacinto and D’Arcy Carden. This move comes early enough for you to be able to enjoy the show without worry the rest of the season.
By and large, we don’t think that this was that hard of a decision at all for NBC to make when you look at some of the show’s ratings so far. Season 2 is averaging a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, down only 10% from season 1. The year-to-year decrease is actually much less than that when you think about the season 1 average being buoyed heavily by the first two episodes airing after the Olympics.
The strengths of this show stem from many different things, but it starts behind the scenes with Schur. He is well-known for his work on both The Office and Parks and Recreation, and he brings some of those fans over to this new show. Beyond just that, he also brings with him a lot of clout in the form of his cast. Danson and Bell are both iconic at what they do and he and NBC both know that.
There is also a benefit that comes from The Good Place being a quality, heavily-serialized comedy with very short runs a season. This helps to ensure that there is an addictive story, but also one that people can catch up on if they fall behind here or there. This show is somewhat akin to a Netflix series, but it’s airing on a major network instead of a streaming provider. If it continues to be as good moving forward as it’s been in the first two seasons, we’ve got a pretty good feeling that these shows are going to be on the air for a rather long time still.
Note that new episodes of The Good Place are going to continue airing leading into the new year, and the third season will air starting this fall. You can head over here to read more on the season 2 return date.
