Ink Master: Angels review: Did Rachel Helmich defeat Nikki Simpson?

Nikki Simpson vs. Rachel Helmich

Tuesday night’s new episode of Ink Master: Angels featured another close finish, and also a little bit of sibling rivalry at the same time.

Here’s the question that we have right now: Do you think that Rachel Helmich cares more about being a part of season 10 now or her brother, who was previously eliminated, voting in part for Nikki Simpson over her? That’s going to be a fun dinner table come Thanksgiving. This is all somewhat ironic given that we actually thought that Rachel’s brother Joe Capone had the better tattoo in the second round and should have advanced over her — but we’re also not a judge and are probably being somewhat biased more based on creativity than actual technical ability.

No doubt, though, Rachel is a fantastic artist. She’s experienced, she works hard, and she’s the sort of artist who seems perfect to come from a place like Pittsburgh that is all about working hard and proving yourself. She should fare well on season 10 based on what we saw during this episode. The overall work was much better this week than the week prior, where we do feel like there were several clear misses with some of the art.

Entertainment-wise, we also appreciated very much the change in tone that was brought on by getting siblings on the show. Some of the “conflict” that was there between the two of them didn’t feel anywhere near as forced as it was in some prior episodes; there was a rivalry, but Joe was also happy for his sister to move forward (that vote at the end notwithstanding). This was the most organic episode of the show in terms of its story progression and with that, also the most entertaining. We also ope that they go to more cities that we consider to be a little more under-the-radar; outside of with sports, there really aren’t all that many people who speak out about Pittsburgh on a regular basis.

Random Ink Master cameo of the week – We’re glad that this segment is back! We’re also glad that we got a chance to see Sarah Miller, even for just a few seconds. She was one of the best contestants ever on the show and by our money, she really should have won her season.

CarterMatt Verdict

Ink Master: Angels delivered a very good episode this week, one that highlighted some great competitors and gave us a pretty good winner. More than that, we think that this episode represented more of what this show can be on its own rather than trying to force itself directly into the Ink Master brand.
