Criminal Minds season 13 episode 9: Joe Mantegna directs ‘False Flag’

Joe Mantegna

It was easy to assume from the start of the season that Joe Mantegna would be stepping back into the Criminal Minds director’s chair, and now we have proof! The series regular is going to be helming the upcoming December 6 installment of the CBS series entitled “False Flag,” and this one looks to be especially interesting. Given the setting and the possible subject matter of conspiracy theorists, this could be the closest that the series comes in quite some time to be somewhat akin to an episode of The X-Files.

You can find out a little more information regarding what makes Criminal Minds season 13 episode 9 stand out in the attached synopsis:

“False Flag” – When two members of a conspiracy group in Roswell, New Mexico perish in quick succession, the BAU is called to investigate, on CRIMINAL MINDS, Wednesday, Dec. 6 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

After reading a synopsis like that there are a couple of things that start to stand out in your head, with one of the principal ones being whether or not there are going to be some other conspiracy theorists in the area that think that aliens or some sort of other supernatural being is responsible for what happened to these people. If that happens, don’t you think that could be trouble? It absolutely impedes on the BAU’s ability to do a great job when they there are other people involved in the case who believe that the deaths happened because of some unexplained entity.

If you love watching Criminal Minds for interesting, challenging mysteries, this could be the episode that is right up your alley. This may also be the final episode of the calendar year, given that there is a repeat currently scheduled to air come Wednesday, December 13. Meanwhile, the 20th is likely going to be the final Survivor episode of the season pending some sort of crazy scheduling surprise no one sees coming.

Mantegna does a great job of including some creepy elements into his stories along with some added bits of intensity. What’s also exciting about “False Flag” is that it seems that he’s also going to have an active role judging from the photo above. Often when cast members direct episodes they have a little bit of a smaller role, mostly because of the fact that it’s often hard to pull double-duty of acting and going behind the camera at the same time.
