Shameless season 8 episode 4 preview: Fiona’s past causes her problems

When Shameless season 8 episode 4 airs next week, we’re going to see some of these characters pasts impact them in many different ways. The synopsis CarterMatt has for you below is a great way to lead off some of what we’re talking about:

A blast from the past shakes up Fiona’s view of her life. Meanwhile, Frank gets involved with Liam’s school and becomes the most popular dad in the PTA; Lip learns getting laid is harder than anticipated when sober; Ian crosses a boundary with a kid from the youth center; and Kev and V take a trip to meet his birth family.

When it comes to Fiona, her past returning could be either a good or bad thing. When you think about it, she’s the most evolved member of the entire Gallagher family. She’s the one who has forged her own path and found some shred of evidence that there’s a much better way to live. Therefore, we worry about her sinking back into an abyss. It’s hard for other characters to plummet when they are already in a pit.

As for the Frank story, it’s mostly entertaining to us because of the fact that he’s the sort of guy who probably takes up working with Liam’s school for the sake of his own self-interest. He probably could care less about the fact that he is helping Liam’s school and just likes the fact that there are people interested in giving him some attention. He’s focusing on what matters most to him … but we suppose that we should give him a brownie point just because he is at least not causing problems for anyone else at the moment.

As for the other stories that are coming up, the growth of Ian excites us just because it feels like he’s someone close to being able to stand on his own two feet. His arc in general the past two years with him tackling some of his demons and trying to get a career going for himself has been a personal favorite. (Plus, we just love Cameron Monaghan.)
