Grey’s Anatomy season 14 spoilers: Carina – Arizona story far from done

The Carina – Arizona storyline on Grey’s Anatomy was one of the more surprising plotlines that we’ve had over season 14. While we knew that we’d be meeting Andrew’s sister in advance, one of the bigger surprises was getting a chance to see her paired off with Jessica Capshaw’s character. The two had a brief romance, one that seemed to end before Sofia arrived back in Seattle to spend some time with Arizona.

Yet, is this really done? Despite Carina being with Owen at the moment, it doesn’t appear to be. Speaking to TVLine leading up to the new episode of Grey’s Anatomy airing on Thursday night, executive producer Krista Vernoff had the following message to pass along:

“Carina’s not over Arizona … People have commitment issues in the world and Arizona happens to be one of those people. And Carina also happens to be one of those people. And there’s a lot of fun to be had looking at that down the line. But don’t think for a minute that love story is over.”

How this story picks back up should be one of the more interesting things to watch, but one thing here is pretty clear: Arizona and Carina will have plenty of opportunities to spend some more time with each other. They work together for one, and we don’t foresee Carina and Owen as being build to last. This to us represents two people who are looking to each other in order to escape some feelings that they may have for some other people. If they break up, it could open the door for another romance elsewhere.

We do feel that Grey’s Anatomy probably does feel a need to establish more of the next great love for Arizona now that Callie is gone — given that Sara Ramirez is now on a different show altogether in Madam Secretary we firmly believe that she’s not going to be turning up in the near future. Unfortunately the Eliza Minnick character last year was doomed to fail also from the get-go — she was the first woman to come in after Callie and have a serious relationship with her, and that is always a challenge. To go along with that further, she also just so happened to be someone who came into the show in an adversarial position with a number of the other characters. Anytime you are entering a show in this sort of position it’s going to be problematic.
