Grey’s Anatomy season 14 will have winter finale cliffhanger
Thursday is going to feature a Grey’s Anatomy version of an event that has actually happened in the real world a number of times over the past several years: A hospital hack. There are some really cruel, really demented people out there in the world who seem to think that there is something satisfying that comes with watching doctors and nurses scramble and figure out a way to help patients after being stripped of what they need.
In speaking a little bit more about what you can expect to see during this hour, Kevin McKidd (who acts in it and also serves as director) said the following to TVLine:
“[The episode is kind] of like Speed [without] the bus. It’s a moving freight train, and then it hits this point at the end of the episode where you’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ It really is a classic and beautifully done cliffhanger episode.”
It probably should not come as much of a shock that there is a big cliffhanger coming given that this is the sort of thing that this show does: It finds a way to leave you wanting more, and they also have not done a big crisis episode on this level since the end of this past season with the fire. What makes this crisis so intense is that it’s something that none of the characters within the hospital are equipped to handle. For a natural disaster there is at least something that they can do to help to combat it; here, they are fully reliant on technicians trying to come in and restore systems while they use their medical knowledge to solve medical crises on the fly.
Let’s also take a moment here to acknowledge one of the more ridiculous critiques out there regarding this episode: That The Night Shift / Chicago Med have both already done episodes revolving around this same exact subject matter. Don’t you think that those two shows have borrowed elements here and there from Grey’s Anatomy, as well? There are only so many different disasters that can strike at a hospital, and as a result of that it’s hard to sit here and proclaim we are altogether shocked about an episode featuring the same basic premise. Where Grey’s Anatomy is likely going to differentiate itself is everything else that it decides to do within the story. The aftermath of these crisis rarely unfold in the same exact way.
